The health and growth of an infant to a large extent depends on adequate sleep. Having the right baby accessories is therefore of great importance. One of the accessories most vital to the sleep routine of your baby is baby pillows. Reflux is avoided by using a baby pillow as well as ensuring a sound sleep. A baby pillow helps keep the head of the baby slightly raised, above the rest of the body and thus helps prevent the baby from bringing up the bottle of feed ingested just before sleeping. This slightly elevated position of the head also helps in breathing easily especially when your baby has a cold when the air passage could be possibly constricted due to mucus. Cranial deformity is a real possibility if the head of your baby is left lying in one position for too long because the skull bones of an infant are very soft and pliant. Baby pillows help give the requisite support and prevent such cranial deformity.

There have been a number of negative reports on the dangers of using baby pillows, mainly out of the fear of the baby smothering in a pillow. S uch a thing can never happen if you choose the right kinds of pillows. A simple precaution is never to choose a feather pillow or a soft pillow. Feather pillows can cause allergic reactions while soft pillows can lead to smothering. Also, always make sure that the pillow cover is made of soft cotton or linen and not synthetic material which can also cause skin irritation. Thin, narrow pillows are commonly used by hospitals and maternity wards as crib pillows. The latest memory foam pillows specially designed for babies are a good buy. Most supermarkets, malls and specialized baby care shops stock baby pillows. It is best to buy recognized products from these places as a recognized brand though more expensive will assure quality and safety. Finally the most important question: what is the right age when you can introduce a baby pillow? There are no thumb rules. However most doctors recommend the use of baby pillows after the baby attains the age of one year. Your baby may also start giving indications that he or she requires a pillow. These signs could include using a bed sheet or a favorite stuffed toy as a head rest, a clear indication that the time to buy a good baby pillow has come.

There are varying outlooks on the safety or utility of using pillows for your baby. Most of such advice is needlessly exaggerated and do not give the right picture of whether to use baby pillows or not. It is true that very young babies, less than one year of age do not require a pillow under normal circumstances, and that some baby pillow products may actually be unsafe. But after about a year, using the right baby pillow actually helps your baby sleep soundly.

The skull is very plaint during the formative years, keeping the head in one side position during sleeping may result in the skull being deformed or lopsided. A rigid on the back sleeping posture can lead to the development of a hollow at the back of the baby’s head. Using a baby pillow can help prevent this and provides the requisite support to the head of your baby. Choosing the right kind of pillow is vital. Never choose a feather or soft pillow as the baby may develop allergies due to the feather or be smothered due to the extra softness enveloping the nose and mouth. The new memory foam pillows are a good buys because they provide the right kind of hold to the baby’s head and are non hazardous.

There are different kinds of baby pillows available in the market. The key is to identify which sort of pillow is best for your baby. Baby pillows used in cribs are just as safe as any other provided they are thin and narrow. If you visit any childcare unit in any hospital, you will find crib pillows being used. Doctors also recommend baby pillows when your baby develops a cold. A baby pillow helps keep the head up and aids breathing which is disturbed by a congested nose. A baby pillow also helps prevent acid reflux and ear infections. Some parents advise that the right time to give your baby a pillow is when the baby graduates from the crib to a bed. This advice is on the basis that smothering is unlikely as the pillow will probably fall off the bed. Some babies even start exhibit signs that they need a pillow. The signal comes in the form of the baby using a stuffed toy or a towel as a headrest on its own. Then it’s definitely time for you to buy a good baby pillow.

A young growing child from the age of one to three years is full of exploratory zeal. This age fondly called as ‘toddler hood’ sees maximum activity, which makes them very tired by the end of the day. Some toddlers take an afternoon nap; others do not. In any case, toddlers need to compensate by sleeping and a good night’s rest is of utmost importance. To ensure complete relaxation of the toddler, the parents must ensure that the baby is clothed comfortably, has a pleasant ‘kiddy’ bedroom, has soothing bedclothes and of course a good baby head pillow. It is important that the pillow is of a good quality and not too soft. A pillow too soft can even lead to smothering. Toddlers usually alter their sleeping posture frequently during the night. Others prefer sleeping on their tummies. A bad quality pillow can even cause neck injuries. It is evident that a baby head pillow is not any other normal pillow. The defining difference between a baby head pillow and other normal pillow is that it is specifically designed to be risk free. Design and quality costs money, so baby head pillows are slightly more expensive than normal pillows but are worth the extra costs because of the safety they provide. Feather pillows are to be strictly avoided as they are known to cause allergies among children.

Keeping the baby’s head slightly elevated helps them breathe more easily and hence a pillow is a must. The head elevation also prevents vomiting of the bedtime feed. The support given to the soft skull bones of a baby by a pillow helps prevent deformities. Baby head pillows come in different sizes and qualities. The latest ‘memory foam’ pillows are very good for the toddler as these pillows mould according to the shape of the baby’s head. The memory foam pillows are made up of Visco Elastic cushioning materials which are designed to prevent Flat Head Syndrome by ensuring evenly distributed pressure around baby’s delicate head. Just like standard sizes for clothes, baby head pillows are also made in different sizes according to the age of the child, so check the label before buying one. These pillows are up for sale in supermarkets, online shops, and specialized baby product shops. Baby head pillows also come with side support pillows which help to keep the toddler snug and in a proper ‘on the back’ posture which further helps the toddler to sleep well. The use of side supports is however, optional especially if your baby prefers to turn posture while asleep. The basic requirement of a sound sleep is certainly a good quality baby head pillow. So, go on, sing a sweet lullaby!

Picking the right baby pillow for your child is important. A pillow can make your child’s sleep much more comfortable. But because babies are shaped so differently from adults, baby pillows are different from adult pillows. How can you know you have selected the right kind of pillow for your child?

First, is your child old enough to use a baby pillow? Pillows should never be put in the crib with babies under the age of two. Because infants’ neck muscles are weak, they run the risk of suffocating on the pillow if they roll onto their belly. Some parents find that elevating their baby’s head when their baby has a stuffed nose or an ear infection helps the baby to sleep, but this is dangerous. If your child is under two but needs her head elevated, consider putting a pillow under the mattress instead, so that the mattress itself is elevated. The mattress is firmer than a pillow, which reduces the chance of suffocation and is safer for small babies.

Second, does your baby require a baby pillow? Small children often do fine without pillows because their bodies are proportioned differently from adults’ bodies. You will know your child is ready for a pillow when they sleep restlessly or when they start balling blankets or stuffed toys under their head.

Third, what size is best for a baby pillow? Small, flat pillows, like the pillows you get on an airplane, are the best ones to choose for your baby. A too high pillow will cause your child to wake with a sore neck, but a small pillow will stop this from happening.

Fourth, what is the best filling for a baby pillow? You may love the soft, fluffy comfort or down or feather pillows, but children are not ready for them. Small children find them to be too soft, and exposing babies to down or feathers too young can cause them to become allergic. A firm, hypoallergenic filling is the best stuffing for your baby’s pillow.

If you have followed these simple guidelines, you are sure to choose the right baby pillow for your child. Remember to make sure your child is old enough and needs a baby pillow, then choose a pillow that is smaller than an adult pillow and filled with a firm, hypoallergenic stuffing. Then do the most important step: See what your child thinks of their new pillow. Your child is the best judge of whether you have picked the right pillow. With these guidelines, you are sure to find a pillow they love.

That baby pillows may cause harm to their child is something parents have heard before. But many simply refuse to believe that baby pillows are harmful. Therefore something that is so innocent looking as a baby pillow is still victimizing many children today. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS is the main cause of fatalities under that age is something that the parents should know. Suffocation, strangulation and rebreathing in children go hand in hand with SIDS. In most of these cases, the baby pillow plays a very important role.

Strangulation and suffocation in children under the age of one is caused by soft bedding, baby pillow or when the baby sleeps on his stomach. Aside from soft bedding and sleeping on their stomach, the baby pillow is as harmful. Major causes of suffocation in younger children includes the baby pillows. This happens if the pillow ends up on the face of the baby if he grasped it accidentally. If the baby fails to remove the pillow from his face, he may get suffocated. In some cases, the baby may get too close to the baby, causing him to get suffocated.

Rebreathing is another leading cause of SIDS. Medically speaking it is when the baby breathes carbon dioxide or bad air, as what it is more commonly known. Rebreathing occurs when instead of inhaling oxygen, the baby inhales his own exhaled carbon dioxide. Rebreathing may be caused by loose sheets or beddings getting over his head. What many do not know is that baby pillows may also cause rebreathing. This may occur if the baby pillow gets too close to the face of the baby and the baby re breathes the carbon dioxide he has exhaled. So even if parents secure the beddings and sheet, if the baby pillow is not removed, the baby is still not safe from rebreathing.

To reduce the risk of SIDS doctors recommend to parents not to use baby pillows until the baby is out of his crib and is already on toddler bed. This is because unless the baby is on his toddler age, he is not ready for pillows. The baby do not need pillows to sleep comfortably so this is not really a problem. In fact, according to medical sleep experts, babies and even adults do not need pillows in order to get a good and comfortable sleep. Nevertheless, make sure that your child is already on his toddler bed and is old enough if you are really keen on introducing him to pillows. Otherwise, instead of introducing him to what you think is an additional comfort, you may just be introducing him to harm.

I am a new parent and I tend to be worried about everything new I introduce to my child. When my husband and I first found out we were pregnant, I immediately worried if I had a glass of wine before I knew or if the fumes of the bus that drove by while I was walking would harm my baby. The best thing I ever did during my first trimester was to finally put away that “What to Expect When You are Expecting” book and stop driving myself crazy. After I put the books away, I found that I enjoyed my pregnancy a lot more. I still get quoted from one zinger I told my husband during those first couple months. “Once this baby is born, I will not worry about anything again.” He found it quite humorous and told me I would most definitely find some causes for worry in parenthood. As he predicted, I continue to find things to worry about. I am now over analyzing the introduction of the baby pillow.

A little baby pillow is often sold in crib sets. This is quite confusing. Unless a child is older than the age of 2, he or she should not use a pillow. There is a danger that a child that young may not be able to breathe when surrounded by a pillow. Duvets and big blankets are not recommended for the same reason. A baby should be placed on his back to sleep, should not have soft things in his crib, and should not have anything covering his face. Sleep sacks are suggested, rather than blankets, when babies are young. Some experts say that even giving a child over the age of 2 a pillow may not make them any more comfortable than they would be without one. The advice from experts is that a pillow should not be given until the child is no longer sleeping in a crib and is in a bed.

A baby pillow, like what you get on an airline flight, is the right size to introduce to a first time pillow user. Choose a pillow that is not feather or down, as such a pillow can often allow the head of a child to sink down too much. We recently introduced our a daughter (she is 2 and a half) to a bed and moved her out of her crib. We started with a baby pillow in the bed, per the recommendations. We would put her to sleep with her head on the baby pillow, but whenever we would check on her, the pillow would be somewhere else in the bed. It was not much of pillow, so it would frequently get lodged between the wall and the bed or disappear in the blankets. After a couple weeks, we ditched the baby pillow and got her a normal sized pillow. She actually sleeps with her head on it and seems to enjoy the fact that her bed is now just like that of Mommy and Daddy.

New mothers are generally aware that giving a baby pillow to a newborn is not something you should do. Pillows and blankets can be dangerous for very young infants, are better kept aside for times when Mom can keep an eye out. But in reality, many mothers end up sacrificing their baby’s comfort for safety longer than they actually need to.

When a baby is old enough, he or she will be safe using a baby pillow… and also quite a bit more comfy. Generally, doctors say that at the age of 12 months, when a child has gained some mobility, it may be time to give them a baby pillow. While you can wait several years to give your child a pillow if you choose, giving him or her one earlier on is a great way to have your one year old (or older) baby sleep through the night. Why? Because an appropriately sized and shaped baby pillow can really help a baby to be more comfortable, and also help them to breathe more easily during the night.

Toddler Baby Pillow Guidelines

Toddlers and older infants are more comfortable with a baby pillow than they are without. But just because it is generally safe to give your older infant or toddler a baby pillow does not mean that any kind of pillow will do. It is always important to think about your child’s safety, of course, and grown up sized pillows can pose a danger to your toddler. Because even if your 1 to 4 year old gets around well, there is still a risk of him or her being smothered by a larger pillow.

So it is important to do your shopping wisely, and buy the right sized baby pillow for your toddler. In addition to being somewhat dangerous, adult sized pillows are just not comfortable for a toddler. A baby pillow, on the other hand, is designed with the proportions of your baby’s head, neck, and shoulders in mind. With toddler sized dimensions, only twelve inches by sixteen inches, a baby pillow supports your child in just the same way an adult pillow supports an adult, but geared towards the angles and dimensions which are comfortable for a baby.

If you are looking to purchase a baby pillow for your older infant or toddler, there are a few more things you should keep in mind. For one, it is a good idea to choose a baby pillow that is hypoallergenic. A hypoallergenic pillow will reduce the amount of allergens your child is exposed to as he or she sleeps, and will usually be of the highest quality. In addition, you should also look into buying a baby pillow with an easy to clean fabric. While a baby pillow with a plastic layer will be the simplest type to clean, the plastic layering may make your child feel overheated. Your best choice is a pillow with a high quality, long lasting fabric that is breathable, but easily wipes clean .
