A young growing child from the age of one to three years is full of exploratory zeal. This age fondly called as ‘toddler hood’ sees maximum activity, which makes them very tired by the end of the day. Some toddlers take an afternoon nap; others do not. In any case, toddlers need to compensate by sleeping and a good night’s rest is of utmost importance. To ensure complete relaxation of the toddler, the parents must ensure that the baby is clothed comfortably, has a pleasant ‘kiddy’ bedroom, has soothing bedclothes and of course a good baby head pillow. It is important that the pillow is of a good quality and not too soft. A pillow too soft can even lead to smothering. Toddlers usually alter their sleeping posture frequently during the night. Others prefer sleeping on their tummies. A bad quality pillow can even cause neck injuries. It is evident that a baby head pillow is not any other normal pillow. The defining difference between a baby head pillow and other normal pillow is that it is specifically designed to be risk free. Design and quality costs money, so baby head pillows are slightly more expensive than normal pillows but are worth the extra costs because of the safety they provide. Feather pillows are to be strictly avoided as they are known to cause allergies among children.

Keeping the baby’s head slightly elevated helps them breathe more easily and hence a pillow is a must. The head elevation also prevents vomiting of the bedtime feed. The support given to the soft skull bones of a baby by a pillow helps prevent deformities. Baby head pillows come in different sizes and qualities. The latest ‘memory foam’ pillows are very good for the toddler as these pillows mould according to the shape of the baby’s head. The memory foam pillows are made up of Visco Elastic cushioning materials which are designed to prevent Flat Head Syndrome by ensuring evenly distributed pressure around baby’s delicate head. Just like standard sizes for clothes, baby head pillows are also made in different sizes according to the age of the child, so check the label before buying one. These pillows are up for sale in supermarkets, online shops, and specialized baby product shops. Baby head pillows also come with side support pillows which help to keep the toddler snug and in a proper ‘on the back’ posture which further helps the toddler to sleep well. The use of side supports is however, optional especially if your baby prefers to turn posture while asleep. The basic requirement of a sound sleep is certainly a good quality baby head pillow. So, go on, sing a sweet lullaby!

That baby pillows may cause harm to their child is something parents have heard before. But many simply refuse to believe that baby pillows are harmful. Therefore something that is so innocent looking as a baby pillow is still victimizing many children today. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS is the main cause of fatalities under that age is something that the parents should know. Suffocation, strangulation and rebreathing in children go hand in hand with SIDS. In most of these cases, the baby pillow plays a very important role.

Strangulation and suffocation in children under the age of one is caused by soft bedding, baby pillow or when the baby sleeps on his stomach. Aside from soft bedding and sleeping on their stomach, the baby pillow is as harmful. Major causes of suffocation in younger children includes the baby pillows. This happens if the pillow ends up on the face of the baby if he grasped it accidentally. If the baby fails to remove the pillow from his face, he may get suffocated. In some cases, the baby may get too close to the baby, causing him to get suffocated.

Rebreathing is another leading cause of SIDS. Medically speaking it is when the baby breathes carbon dioxide or bad air, as what it is more commonly known. Rebreathing occurs when instead of inhaling oxygen, the baby inhales his own exhaled carbon dioxide. Rebreathing may be caused by loose sheets or beddings getting over his head. What many do not know is that baby pillows may also cause rebreathing. This may occur if the baby pillow gets too close to the face of the baby and the baby re breathes the carbon dioxide he has exhaled. So even if parents secure the beddings and sheet, if the baby pillow is not removed, the baby is still not safe from rebreathing.

To reduce the risk of SIDS doctors recommend to parents not to use baby pillows until the baby is out of his crib and is already on toddler bed. This is because unless the baby is on his toddler age, he is not ready for pillows. The baby do not need pillows to sleep comfortably so this is not really a problem. In fact, according to medical sleep experts, babies and even adults do not need pillows in order to get a good and comfortable sleep. Nevertheless, make sure that your child is already on his toddler bed and is old enough if you are really keen on introducing him to pillows. Otherwise, instead of introducing him to what you think is an additional comfort, you may just be introducing him to harm.
